Bacon Brothers - Instrument Drive.jpg

In the spring of 2014, WQXR held its first-ever musical Instrument Drive, held in partnership with the New York City Department of Education, Sam Ash music stores and the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation. Thanks to strong on-air, social media and community engagement, listeners in the five NYC boroughs, Westchester, Long Island and Northern New Jersey helped WQXR surpass its goal of collecting 1,000 instruments by donating more than 3,000 instruments. Throughout Fiscal Year 2015, the instruments were refurbished and distributed to the music programs of selected New York City schools, offering much-needed classroom enrichment programs. Instruments went to 92 schools, five community organizations and 61 nonprofit groups. Over time, the instruments placed in these programs will benefit more than 50,000 New York City public school students. The drive concluded with a concert by the Bacon Brothers. Michael and Kevin Bacon performed with music students from the Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School (WHEELS) in The Greene Space.
